Kia Sorento's First Month Retail Sales: Hybrids Underwhelm
Kia launched the Sorento in diesel and strong hybrid versions in September 2026. The hybrid underwhelmed in its first month. We look at their respective variant wise retail sales.
Kia launched the Sorento in diesel and strong hybrid versions on September 4, 2026. The strong hybrid comes with a 1.6 litre turbo petrol engine and a 1.49 kWh battery. Both Diesel and strong hybrid are offered in 6 and 7 seater options. In its first month of sale, the hybrid's performance was underwhelming with just 29 units registered in its first month compared with 212 units of the diesel.
Of the 241 Sorento registered in the month, diesel accounted for 88% and the strong hybrid for 12%. All registered sales were of the 7-seater. No 6-seater Sorento was sold in September 2026.
Hybrid Costs More Without Added Advantage
The strong hybrid is priced ₹1.5 lakh above the diesel at every trim. The diesel HTE starts at ₹27.99 lakh, while the hybrid HTE starts at ₹29.49 lakh.
Buyers seem to be opting for the perceived trusted powertrain as the Sorento strong hybrid does not offer a running cost advantage over the diesel.
What Kia Expects
Kia India’s Atul Sood told Business Today that strong hybrids will be around 15% of the market by 2030, similar to BEVs.
Strong hybrids accounted for 2% of passenger vehicle registrations in September 2026, while EVs were at 8.5%, as we reported in our NEV market share analysis. Reaching 15% is a tall order when EVs are at 8.5%.
Diesel Variants

The HTK(A) was the top diesel variant with 88 units, 41.5% of diesel registrations. The HTX(A) which is an ADAS equipped All Wheel Drive variant, followed with 64 units (30.2%), the HTE(O) with 30 units (14.2%) and the HTK with 25 units (11.8%). The remaining 5 units were of the HTX AWD variant.
The two AWD variants together registered 69 units, 32.6% of diesel registrations.
Hybrid Variants

The HTX(A) AWD was the top hybrid variant with 16 units, 55.2% of hybrid registrations. The HTK(A) followed with 9 units (31%). The remaining 4 units were of the HTK (2 units), HTX AWD (1 unit) and HTE(O) (1 unit) variants.
The top end AWD variants accounted for 58.6% of overall sales (17 units).
ElecTree's Take
Kia Sorento strong hybrid was launched to rival the Toyota Innova Hycross which was the best selling strong hybrid in September 2026 with 3,703 units . Kia has placed high expectations of 3,000 - 4,000 unit monthly sales. The figures are ambitious. But as a 7 seater, it also competes with Mahindra XEV 9S which registered 4,439 units and the MG Tomahawk EV which sold 419 units. MG will start deliveries of the Tomahawk PHEV in November 2026. All these cars are trying to attract the same buyer who is looking for space and low cost of running. Kia India has a tough task ahead of the upcoming festival month.
