Tesla has sold 993 EVs in India between September 2025 and September 2026, with 294 units in September alone. The Model Y L accounted for 238 of them. Here is their sales journey so far.
Tesla completed over one year of sales in India in September 2026. Deliveries began in September 2025, amid huge fanfare and years of waiting. The Indian market did not prove easy for Tesla at first, but it seems the future is bright for the luxury EV maker.
Tesla sold 993 EVs in India between September 2025 and September 2026. Of these, 294 were registered in September 2026 alone, which is 4.3 times the 69 units of September 2025.
The Slow Start
The initial months were difficult. Tesla could not cross triple digits in any month, and the highest figure was 69, recorded in both September and December 2025. In 2025, Tesla sold 226 units, an average of 57 a month.
Sales slipped further in 2026. From January to May, Tesla sold 202 units, an average of 40 a month. The lowest month was February 2026 with 29 units.
Tesla Changes Its Strategy

Tesla then changed its approach. It discontinued the Model Y LR, which was priced at ₹67.89 lakh, and launched the six-seat Model Y L at ₹61.99 lakh. The Model Y L was was providing an upgrade but at lower price.
Tesla also cut the price of the Model Y Standard Range by ₹9 lakh, from ₹59.89 lakh to ₹50.89 lakh. It is now sold as the Model Y Premium RWD. The two moves were a turning point.
Model Y L

Model Y L deliveries began in June 2026 with 20 units. The numbers then climbed to 85 in July, 82 in August and 238 in September. In four months, the Model Y L registered 425 units.
The Model Y SR has registered the same 425 units but in 13 months' time. (162 in 2025 and 263 in 2026). The Model Y L reached the same figure in four.
Its share of Tesla's monthly registrations kept rising. It made up 52.6% of June's 38 units and 73.3% of July's 116 units. In August it was 70.1% of 117 units, and in September 81.0% of 294 units.
Model Y Standard Range
The price cut also showed in the Standard Range's numbers. It registered 11 units in June, 26 in July, 32 in August and 56 in September. Its best month remains the September 2025 when it was launched, when it registered 67 units.
The Model Y Long Range RWD registered 142 units over the 13 months. It was down to 3 units in August and none in September. It seems Tesla has cleared the stock of the now discontinued model.
More Showrooms, More Reach
Another important factor is the increasing footprint across India. At the time of launch there were only 3 Tesla showrooms or experience centre as they like to call it; Mumbai, Delhi and Gurugram. But in recent months they have opened in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Noida. This has increased the access and ease of test drive for Indians.
As Tesla's growth intensifies over the coming months, it will be intriguing to see how it compares with the incumbent luxury EV OEMs in India like BMW, Mercedes, BYD etc.
