Punch EV Tops EV Sales in September, Windsor Out of Top Three
Tata Punch EV led the 4 wheeler EV retail sales in September 2026, followed by Mahindra XEV 9S in second and Tata Nexon EV in third position. We deep dive into their numbers and variant level performance.
Tata's Punch EV is India's best-selling electric vehicle in September 2026, with 4,666 registrations according to latest retail sales data of Vahan. This includes 32 units of the outgoing previous generation. Mahindra's XEV 9S slips to second with 4,439 units, after leading for the previous two months. MG's Windsor drops out of the top three, replaced by Tata's Nexon EV at 3,469 units, which includes 16 units of the outgoing previous generation. All three models grew month-on-month. Punch EV was up 30.7% from 3,571 units in August, XEV 9S up 15.2% from 3,852 units, and Nexon EV up 22.4% from 2,835 units.
Tata Punch EV

Punch EV is priced from ₹9.79 lakh to ₹12.99 lakh (ex-showroom). It comes with two battery options, 30 kWh and 40 kWh, across five trims. With 4,666 units, it accounted for 12.9% of EV sales in September. Of the 4,634 new-generation Punch EVs sold, Empowered+ S, the top variant, accounted for 69.2% of the total with 3,208 units. This was followed by Smart+ with 611 units (13.2%), Adventure with 556 units (12%), Empowered with 258 units (5.6%) and Smart with 1 unit. The 40 kWh pack was the preferred choice with 4,627 units, 99.85% sales. Only 7 units of the 30 kWh pack were sold, 6 of Smart+ and 1 of Smart.
Mahindra XEV 9S

The XEV 9S is priced from ₹20.65 lakh to ₹30.15 lakh (ex-showroom) and comes with three battery options, 59 kWh, 70 kWh and 79 kWh. With 4,439 units, it accounted for 12.2% of EV sales in September. Of these, Pack Two Above sold 1,431 units, 32.2% of the total to remain the best selling variant. It is offered with 70 kWh and 79 kWh packs, which sold 482 and 949 units respectively. This was followed by Pack Three Above with 1,220 units (27.5%), Pack Three with 1,193 units (26.9%) and Pack One Above with 595 units (13.4%). The 7-seater layout was the preferred choice with 4,404 units (99.2%). Looking at the battery pack preference, the 79 kWh pack accounted for 3,718 units (83.8%), followed by the 70 kWh with 482 units (10.9%) and the 59 kWh, which is offered in only the entry variant, with 239 units (5.4%).
Tata Nexon EV

The Nexon EV is priced from ₹13.99 lakh to ₹17.29 lakh (ex-showroom) and is offered with a single 45 kWh battery pack. It has entered the top 3 replacing MG Windsor. With 3,469 units, it accounted for 9.6% of EV sales in September. Of the 3,453 Nexon 45 EVs sold, Fearless was the best-selling variant with 1,037 units (30%), followed by Creative with 1,022 units (29.6%). Together the two accounted for 59.6% of sales. This was followed by Empowered with 725 units (21%) and Empowered+ A, the top variant, with 666 units (19.3%). Empowered+ which is now discontinued sold 3 units, possibly of leftover stock. The remaining 16 units were of the outgoing previous-generation Nexon EV.
