The updated VF5 features revised headlights, connected LED tail-lamps and redesigned bumpers. If introduced in India, it could become a more affordable alternative to VinFast's existing VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs.

VinFast's facelifted VF5 electric SUV has surfaced through a design patent reported in India, revealing changes to the compact model's exterior. The development comes as the Vietnamese automaker expands its electric vehicle portfolio and manufacturing operations in the country.

The reported filing shows revised headlamps, redesigned front and rear bumpers, an updated bonnet and connected LED tail-lamps. Similar changes were seen on VF5 test vehicles spotted in Vietnam in September 2026.

The development is significant because VinFast's current Indian passenger EV portfolio is positioned above the VF5. A smaller model could allow the company to compete in a more price-sensitive segment of India's electric car market. However, VinFast has not announced an Indian launch date, pricing or technical specifications for the facelifted VF5.

What has changed in the VF5 facelift?

The updated VF5 retains the basic proportions of the existing international model, with most exterior revisions concentrated at the front and rear.

The headlamps appear slimmer and are positioned lower than those on the current VF5. The black trim beneath them has been reduced and integrated more closely with the redesigned lower bumper. The bonnet also receives a revised shape.

At the rear, the facelift introduces connected LED tail-lamps. The current model uses a different arrangement, with some lighting elements positioned lower on the bumper. The updated design brings these elements into the main rear lighting assembly.

The side profile remains largely unchanged, although overseas test vehicles have been seen with revised alloy-wheel designs.

These changes indicate a styling update rather than an entirely new vehicle platform. The design images do not establish whether the facelift will receive changes to its dimensions, chassis or battery packaging.

Interior changes seen in overseas testing

Images of the facelifted VF5 spotted in Vietnam also suggest changes to the cabin.

The test vehicle features a redesigned dashboard with a larger freestanding touchscreen, a two-spoke steering wheel and a revised centre console. A rotary gear selector is also visible.

The interior appears to move away from a conventional separate instrument display, with driving information potentially integrated into the central touchscreen.

However, these details come from overseas test vehicles. VinFast has not confirmed whether the same interior configuration or equipment will be offered in India.

Where would the VF5 fit in VinFast's India portfolio?

VinFast entered India's passenger electric vehicle market with the VF6 and VF7, launched in September 2025. Both models are assembled at the company's manufacturing facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.

The VF6 currently starts at ₹18.19 lakh, while the VF7 starts at ₹22.99 lakh, according to VinFast's India website.

This leaves room below the VF6 for a smaller and potentially more affordable model.

The existing VF5 measures approximately 3.97 metres in length, placing it in the compact electric crossover category. Its dimensions suggest that, depending on its eventual pricing and specifications, it could compete with models such as the Tata Punch EV and other entry-level electric SUVs.

That positioning would be relevant for VinFast because the lower-priced electric car market operates under different competitive conditions from the segments occupied by the VF6 and VF7. Purchase price, usable range, charging convenience and after-sales support can all influence consumer decisions.

The VF5 could therefore broaden VinFast's addressable market rather than simply add another model to its existing range.

However, its commercial positioning will depend on the price and specifications VinFast ultimately chooses for India.

What do the international VF5 specifications tell us?

The current VF5 is offered in international markets with different battery and powertrain configurations.

In Indonesia, the model has been offered with a 29.6kWh battery and a claimed range of approximately 268km under the NEDC testing cycle. Other international configurations have been reported with a 37.23kWh battery and a claimed range of up to 326km under NEDC.

These figures provide a reference for the VF5's existing product positioning, but they do not establish the specifications of the facelift or any future Indian version.

The NEDC range figures should also not be directly compared with Indian certified range figures or real-world driving results, as the testing conditions differ.

VinFast has yet to disclose which battery pack, motor configuration or charging system would be used if the updated VF5 enters India.

Why the design filing matters

The reported Indian design filing follows earlier sightings of VF5 test vehicles on Indian roads and more recent images of the updated model in Vietnam.

Taken together, these developments suggest that VinFast has been evaluating the VF5 for possible market expansion.

But a design patent is not equivalent to a product launch approval or a confirmed production plan. Manufacturers may register designs to protect intellectual property even when commercial introduction remains undecided.

For VinFast, a smaller electric SUV could complement its existing Indian models and make greater use of its local manufacturing and sales infrastructure, depending on the company's eventual product strategy.

There is currently no official confirmation that the VF5 facelift will be assembled at Thoothukudi.

What remains unconfirmed?

VinFast has not announced the facelifted VF5's India launch timeline, ex-showroom price, battery options, certified range or local manufacturing plans.

The design development offers an early indication of how the updated VF5 may look, while the company's existing Indian portfolio provides context for where it could be positioned.

The more important question is whether VinFast will introduce the VF5 at a price and specification level that allows it to compete effectively in India's compact electric SUV segment.

Until the company makes a formal announcement, the facelifted VF5 remains a potential addition to its Indian lineup rather than a confirmed launch.
