The complete ₹40 lakh-plus luxury EV segment recorded 1,385 retail registrations in September 2026, up from 938 in August 2026 and 987 in September 2025. That represented growth of 48% month-on-month and 40% year-on-year. The increase was substantial, but much of it came from the Tesla Model Y L, BMW iX1 and BMW i5.

The top 10 accounted for 1,322 registrations, or 96.0% of the complete segment, leaving 55 registrations across all other models. The BMW iX1 and BYD Sealion 7 combined for 764 registrations, while the leading three models reached 1,002 registrations and 72.8% of total luxury EV volume.

Note: “New / no base” indicates zero registrations in the September 2025 comparison. “Low base” is used for the established BMW i5 because both comparison periods contained only one registration, making the percentage change analytically misleading.

BMW gets three models in the top 10

BMW accumulated 493 registrations across the iX1, i5 and i7, equal to 37.3% of the ranked total. BYD followed with 379 registrations from the Sealion 7, while Tesla contributed 294 across the Model Y L and Model Y SR. Mercedes-Benz added 124 registrations across the CLA EV, Maybach EQS SUV and EQS SUV, and Volvo added 32.

1. BMW iX1 LWB wins a close contest

The BMW iX1 led with 385 registrations, up 44.2% from 267 in August and 20.7% from 319 a year earlier. It finished only six units ahead of the Sealion 7, making the contest for first place notably close.

2. BYD Sealion 7 finishes six units behind

The BYD Sealion 7 recorded 379 registrations, rising 22.3% month on month from 310 and 33.5% year on year from 284. Its 69-unit monthly increase helped it retain second place and close to within six registrations of the leader.

3. Tesla Model Y L delivers the largest monthly gain

The Tesla Model Y L rose to 238 registrations from 82 in August, a 190.2% increase and the largest absolute gain in the ranking at 156 units. With no September 2025 registrations in the supplied data, a year-on-year growth rate is not meaningful. Read our detailed Tesla coverage here

4. BMW i5 LWB impresses post-launch

BMW i5 registrations reached 91 in September after the Sep-26 launch. It gave BMW a second model among the four highest-ranked luxury EVs. The LWB formula is working for BMW.

5. Mercedes-Benz CLA EV records strong monthly growth

The Mercedes-Benz CLA EV registered 69 units, up 72.5% from 40 in August. Numbers are not as high as Mercedes would want due to supply issues

6. Tesla Model Y SR grows monthly but declines annually

The Tesla Model Y SR recorded 56 registrations, up 75.0% from 32 in August but down 16.4% from 67 a year earlier. It gave Tesla a second entry in the top six. Buyers are preferring a Model Y L over Model Y SR

7. Maybach EQS SUV records 32 registrations

The Mercedes-Benz Maybach EQS SUV increased 60.0% month on month to 32 registrations and more than doubled from the 14-unit September 2025 base.

8. Volvo EX30 holds broadly steady

The Volvo EX30 reached 32 registrations, up 6.7% from 30 in August. It also rose sharply from the one-unit September 2025 base, although that year-on-year percentage should be interpreted in the context of the very low comparison.

9. Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV posts the sharpest decline

The Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV fell 61.7% to 23 registrations from 60 in August and declined 69.7% from 76 a year earlier. It recorded the sharpest month-on-month fall among the ranked models.

10. BMW i7 completes the ranking

The BMW i7 registered 17 units, up 13.3% from 15 in August and 21.4% from 14 in September 2025. It set the entry threshold for the top 10 and gave BMW its third model in the ranking.

What the September ranking shows

The complete segment increased by 458 registrations from August. Model Y L supplied 156 of those incremental units, followed by iX1 with 118, i5 with 90, and Sealion 7 with 69. Together, those four models added 433 registrations, equal to 94.5% of the segment’s net monthly increase. Models outside the top 10 collectively declined to 55 registrations from 62 in August.

Compared with September 2025, the complete segment gained 398 registrations. The top 10 grew by 546, while registrations outside the ranking fell from 211 to 63. The market therefore expanded strongly but also became more concentrated around the leading models. Future monthly results will show whether the iX1 can retain its narrow lead and whether Model Y L can sustain its September acceleration.
