Top 5 Best Selling EVs This Year: Windsor Leads with Clear Margin
MG Windsor is India’s best-selling EV between January and September 2026, followed by Tata Punch EV in second and Tata Nexon EV in third position. Here are the top 5 with their numbers from the same period last year.
In our recent retail sales monthly rankings, we revealed how the latest launches Tata Punch EV and Mahindra XEV 9S have become the best selling EVs in recent months. However if we look at the overall year-to-date retail sales (January to September 2026) the story completely flips.
Together, the top 5 registered 132,650 units, 51.9% of the 255,528 EVs registered in the period. MG Windsor which has seen its ranking fall in recent months, leads the YTD sales by ~6,000 units.
Below is the complete top 5 ranking.
Windsor
The Windsor registered 34,012 units, a 13.3% market share. This was up 7.7% from 31,590 units in January to September 2025.
Its rank has fallen in recent months, and it finished fourth in September 2026 behind the Punch EV, XEV 9S and Nexon EV. Even so, it is 6,089 units ahead of the second-placed Punch EV.
To revive interest in the Windsor, MG has launched the new Indulge Edition which is offered in the 38 kWh battery pack option.
Punch EV
The Punch EV registered 27,923 units, a 10.9% market share. This was up 121.2% from 12,623 units in the same period last year, more than doubling its sales.
It was the best-selling EV in September 2026 with 4,666 units. It is 861 units ahead of the Nexon EV.
The new Punch facelift launched in early 2026 with 40 kWh battery has played a pivotal role in the revival.
Nexon EV
The Nexon EV registered 27,062 units, a 10.6% market share. This was up 58.7% from 17,048 units in January to September 2025.
It replaced the Windsor in the top three in September, and it is 1,119 units ahead of the XEV 9S.
Though there has been no facelift or techlift, the shift towards EVs due to rising petrol, diesel and CNG prices has helped the Nexon EV.
XEV 9S
The XEV 9S registered 25,943 units, a 10.2% market share. It had no registrations in January to September 2025.
It was the best-selling EV in July and August, before slipping to second in September. It accounted for 57% of Mahindra’s EV registrations in September.
A traditional SUV design alongwith best in segment charging speed and range have made it the best selling EV in the 20-30 lakh bracket.
XEV 9e
The XEV 9e registered 17,710 units, a 6.9% market share. This was up 17.4% from 15,084 units in the same period last year.
It is 8,233 units behind the XEV 9S. In September 2026, it was 21% below its September 2025 figure.

ElecTree's Take
With EV sales skyrocketing every month and trust being shown in these models consistently, it will be difficult for other EVs to break into the top 5 ranking. However with new models like Hector Tomahawk EV and Honda 0 Alpha arriving in the Indian market, these ranking may see a shift in the next year.
