Exclusive: MG Hector Tomahawk EV Charges Faster than MG Advertises

MG advertises a maximum DC charging rate of 90 kW for the Hector Tomahawk EV, but an exclusive real-world test recorded a peak of 111.5 kW. Here is how the 69.2 kWh electric SUV performed across its complete charging curve.

MG officially advertises a maximum DC fast-charging rate of 90 kW for the Hector Tomahawk EV. However, a real-world charging test recorded a peak of 111.5 kW—23% higher than MG’s advertised figure.

The result was not limited to a momentary spike. The Hector Tomahawk EV maintained approximately 110 kW across much of the 10–50% charging window, revealing a stronger charging curve than the official specification suggests.

MG quotes approximately 35 minutes for a 30–80% charge on a 90 kW charger. The company also claims a certified range of up to 517 km from the SUV’s 69.2 kWh LFP battery.

Charging Curve: Over 100 kW Until 50%, Followed by a Controlled Taper

The Hector Tomahawk EV rapidly increased its charging power after the test began at 10% state of charge. It was already drawing approximately 107 kW by around 12%.

Power then remained remarkably consistent:

20%: 109.5 kW

30%: 110.6 kW

39%: 111.0 kW

49%: 111.5 kW

Rather than delivering its peak briefly, the SUV maintained close to 110 kW across nearly 40 percentage points of battery capacity. This broad charging plateau is more useful than a high headline peak that lasts for only a few minutes.

After 50%, power reduced to around 107 kW before settling near 98 kW between approximately 55% and 59%. The first significant step down appeared around 60%, when charging power fell to approximately 89 kW.

The taper became more noticeable as the battery approached 80%:

69%: 88.9 kW

79%: 70.8 kW

80%: 77.7 kW

90%: 47.4 kW

99%: 8.8 kW

Power remained above 70 kW around the 80% mark, which is useful for drivers who need a slightly longer charging stop. The rate then declined steadily as the battery approached full charge. The car charged from 20% to 80% in 25 mins

Where Was the Charging Curve Recorded?

The charging test was conducted by Amogh Padhye (@amoghpadhye) using a Zeon 120 kW DC fast charger fitted with a 250A charging gun.

The station is situated on NH66 along the Mumbai–Goa Highway, approximately 250 km from Anjuna Beach and 320 km from Dadar. Its location makes it a useful charging stop for EV owners travelling between Mumbai and Goa.

A pure-vegetarian restaurant next to the charger serves regular and Jain food. Clean washrooms are also available, giving travellers useful facilities during their charging stop.

ElecTree Take

The Hector Tomahawk EV delivers a well-managed charging curve where it matters most. Its biggest strength isn't just the 111.5 kW peak, but its ability to stay around 110 kW from the early teens until about 50% state of charge.

The reductions after 50% are predictable, while useful charging power continues through the 70–80% range. Charging beyond 80% is considerably slower, so shorter, more frequent highway stops are the more time-efficient strategy.

The recorded performance also raises an interesting question: why does MG advertise only 90 kW when the vehicle appears capable of accepting substantially more power?
