Top 10 Best-Selling Cars in September 2026: Retail vs Wholesale
Wagon R led September 2026 retail registrations, while Baleno topped wholesale dispatches. Comparing Vahan and Auto Punditz data reveals how India’s best-selling car rankings change depending on the measure used.
India’s September 2026 model rankings change materially depending on which measure is used. Vahan retail registrations place the Maruti Wagon R first with 19,592 units. The wholesale dispatch list instead puts the Maruti Baleno at the top with 25,392 units, even though the Baleno ranks only eleventh in retail with 15,059 registrations.
The difference matters because the two datasets capture separate stages of the sales chain. Wholesale figures measure vehicles sent by manufacturers to dealers. Retail registrations capture vehicles registered to customers. Comparing them reveals where monthly supply and registrations were closely aligned and where they diverged, but it does not by itself establish unsold inventory. Let's take a deep dive.
Retail momentum remained strong
The retail top ten generated 172,542 registrations in September, up 3.5% from August and 25.6% from September 2025. Six models grew month on month: Scorpio, Fronx, Brezza, Swift, Creta and Wagon R. Punch, Nexon, Ertiga and Dzire declined sequentially.
Nine of the ten models increased year on year. Brezza led annual growth at 56.1%, followed by Punch at 38.8%, Scorpio at 35.7% and Wagon R at 30.7%. Swift was the only model below its September 2025 volume, declining 3.2%.

Nine models appear in both top ten lists
The retail top ten and wholesale top ten share nine models. Brezza appears only in the retail ranking, where it places third with 18,190 registrations. Baleno appears only in the wholesale top ten, where it ranks first. The table below follows the retail order and compares wholesale performance wherever the figure is available.

Note: Gap equals wholesale dispatches minus retail registrations. Brezza’s dispatch figure is unavailable because it is outside the supplied wholesale top ten.
Comparison-only entry: Baleno — retail rank 11, 15,059 registrations; wholesale rank 1, 25,392 dispatches; gap +10,333.
The two rankings answer different questions
Wholesale data helps track manufacturer output and dealer supply. Retail registrations better identify which models reached customers during the month. Neither measure is inherently superior, but each needs to be labelled correctly and interpreted within its own stage of the sales process.
The nine shared models recorded 11,588 more dispatches than registrations, but the differences varied sharply by model. A single month cannot establish an inventory trend; that requires dealer-stock data or a longer comparison series. September nevertheless shows why wholesale dispatches and retail registrations must be labelled and analysed separately.
