MG Teases Its First ADAPT-Based EV: What the New SUV Reveals

JSW MG Motor India has released the first official teaser of its upcoming electric SUV based on the company's new ADAPT platform. The teaser carries a simple message: “ADAPT takes its first electric form.” While MG has not officially named the SUV in the teaser, the model is widely expected to be the Hector Hawk, which is scheduled to debut in India on August 26.

This latest development is different because it gives us the first official visual clues about the upcoming model and confirms that MG's new ADAPT architecture is now moving from the technology stage to a production EV.

The Teaser Gives Us the First Look

MG has kept the teaser deliberately limited, but the front-end design is clearly visible. The SUV gets a closed-off front section instead of a conventional grille, along with a distinctive lighting signature. The teaser also shows a boxy, upright profile with substantial black cladding, giving the SUV a more rugged appearance.

The exact Indian dimensions and complete exterior design have not yet been officially revealed. Previous reports have linked the upcoming model to the Wuling Starlight 560 and put its length at around 4.7 metres. For now, those details should be treated as reported information rather than final India-spec specifications.

ADAPT Is the Bigger Story

The SUV is important, but the platform underneath it could have a much bigger role in MG's future India strategy.

MG describes ADAPT, or Advanced Drive Architecture Platform Technology, as a multi-new-energy-vehicle architecture designed to support different powertrain technologies, including battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, hybrid and range-extender systems. The first Indian production model based on the platform, however, is now confirmed to take the electric route.

That flexibility could be particularly useful in India, where EV adoption is growing but different powertrains continue to coexist. Rather than developing completely separate architectures for every technology, MG can potentially use the same underlying platform strategy across multiple types of electrified vehicles.

MG has also indicated that it will initially focus on BEV and PHEV products from this platform. The electric SUV is therefore only the beginning of what could become a wider ADAPT-based range.

Range Will Matter, But Price Could Matter More

Range has been one of the biggest talking points around the upcoming SUV. Earlier reports have suggested a 69.2kWh battery and around 530km of claimed range on the CLTC cycle for the electric version. However, these are based on reported specifications and the Chinese testing cycle, so they should not be treated as the final India-certified figures until MG confirms them.

Price could ultimately be even more important. Reports have pointed towards a starting price of around ₹18 lakh, but MG has not announced an official figure yet. If that expectation holds, the new SUV could undercut the Mahindra XEV 9S, which starts at ₹20.65 lakh ex-showroom.

That could give MG a strong opening in the electric three-row SUV space. But for now, ₹18 lakh remains a reported expectation, not a confirmed price.

Mahindra Already Has a Head Start

The new MG will enter a segment where Mahindra already has a product on sale. The XEV 9S is available to buyers today, giving it an advantage that MG cannot simply match through specifications on paper.

That means the Hector Hawk, if that is indeed the final name, will need to make a strong case on pricing, range, features and overall ownership experience when it arrives. Buyers will have to decide whether MG's new platform and product proposition are compelling enough to wait for.

What We Still Don't Know

The teaser answers one important question but leaves several others open. MG has not yet confirmed the final Indian battery capacity, certified range, motor output, charging specifications, variants or price. The official name and complete equipment list also remain to be announced.

For now, the important development is that MG's ADAPT platform has moved from a technology announcement to its first production electric vehicle. The teaser gives us the first look at that vehicle, while the rest of the details will have to wait for the August 26 debut.

The real test will then be whether MG can turn the flexibility of ADAPT into a competitive electric SUV in a market where Mahindra and Tata are already moving quickly.
