MG Hector Hawk Launch Confirmed for August 26: How It Could Take on Mahindra

JSW MG Motor India has confirmed August 26, 2026 as the launch date for its upcoming Hector Hawk, which is expected to arrive in both fully electric and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions. The model is expected to be a seven-seat SUV, putting it directly into India's growing electric family-SUV segment.

The latest development shifts the story from what MG is developing to how competitively it can launch it.

What We Know So Far

The EV is expected to use a 69.2 kWh battery, with around 201 PS and 310 Nm, and a claimed range of about 530 km under the CLTC cycle.

The PHEV is expected to combine a 20.5 kWh battery with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, with around 125 km of electric-only range.

Reported/global specifications; final India-spec figures are yet to be confirmed.

The 530 km figure is based on the CLTC testing cycle, so it should not be treated as the final India-certified range.

How It Compares With the XEV 9S

The Mahindra XEV 9S is the most direct benchmark because it is already on sale as a seven-seat electric SUV.

Range figures use different testing standards and are not directly comparable.

Mahindra has one clear advantage: the XEV 9S is already available to buyers. MG will therefore need to compete on price, range and features rather than simply being another seven-seat EV.

Price Could Change the Equation

Pre-launch reports have suggested a starting price of around ₹18 lakh, but MG has not confirmed this figure.

If the EV launches anywhere near that level, it could create a lower entry point for large seven-seat electric SUVs and put pressure on the XEV 9S.

Tata will also be watching. The Harrier EV is already available, although it is a five-seater, while a future electric Safari would be a more direct seven-seat rival.

Why the PHEV Matters

The PHEV gives MG another route into the market.

A reported 125 km electric-only range could cover many daily commutes, while the petrol engine provides flexibility for longer journeys.

That means MG is targeting two different buyers with the same SUV:

EV: for buyers ready to go fully electric.

PHEV: for buyers who want electric driving without giving up a petrol backup.

This could be particularly relevant for buyers who remain concerned about charging availability on longer journeys.
