Creta Electric recorded its strongest month of 2026 with 810 retail registrations in August. Excellence and the larger battery continued to lead the mix, while the IONIQ 5 registered 50 units across the four full months after its April update.

August growth comes almost entirely from Creta Electric

Hyundai recorded 817 electric vehicle retail registrations in August 2026, up 37.5% from 594 in July and 19.1% from 686 in August 2025, according to the Vahan data compiled for this analysis.

Creta Electric accounted for 810 registrations, rising 39.2% from July’s 582 and 20.9% from 670 a year earlier. IONIQ 5 contributed the remaining seven units, leaving Creta Electric responsible for 99.1% of Hyundai’s August EV registrations.

The monthly recovery is clear. The wider picture is more cautious: cumulative registrations remain below last year.

Creta Electric has recovered for two months but remains behind last year

Creta Electric registrations recovered from 351 in June to 582 in July and 810 in August 2026.

August was Creta Electric’s best month of 2026 and its strongest since April 2025, when it also recorded 810 registrations. The June–August progression shows two consecutive monthly increases rather than a rebound from July alone.

However, January–August 2026 registrations totalled 4,031, compared with 5,543 in the same period of 2025. That leaves a shortfall of 1,512 units, or 27.3%. August’s improvement has not yet offset the weaker months earlier in the year.

Including IONIQ 5, Hyundai registered 4,146 EVs in January–August 2026, down 27.0% from 5,678 a year earlier. IONIQ 5 registrations fell from 135 to 115 over that period.

The next test is whether Creta Electric can sustain August’s higher volume. One strong month improves the trajectory, but does not by itself establish a sustained turnaround.

Excellence still leads while base variants gain ground

Excellence accounted for 62.7% of August registrations. The base group’s January–August share rose from 4.1% in 2025 to 17.7% in 2026.
Excellence accounted for 62.7% of August registrations. The base group’s January–August share rose from 4.1% in 2025 to 17.7% in 2026.

The Excellence variants recorded 508 registrations in August, representing 62.7% of Creta Electric sales. Base variants contributed 165 units, or 20.4%, while mid variants recorded 137 units, or 16.9%.

The base group comprises Executive, Executive Tech and Executive (O). The mid group includes Premium, Smart and Smart (O), while Excellence forms the top group. These categories follow the registration dataset.

Across January–August, base registrations rose from 225 in 2025 to 713 in 2026, more than tripling despite the overall decline in Creta Electric volume. Their share increased by 13.6 percentage points, from 4.1% to 17.7%.

Mid-group registrations fell from 1,725 to 861, with share declining from 31.1% to 21.4%. Excellence remained dominant: its registrations fell from 3,593 to 2,457, while its share moved from 64.8% to 61.0%.

The sharpest shift is therefore the expansion of the base group and contraction of the middle.

The larger battery still accounts for two in three registrations

The 51.4 kWh battery accounted for 67.4% of August sales. The 42 kWh pack gained year-to-date share because its volume declined less sharply.

Creta Electric is offered with 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh battery packs, as listed in Hyundai’s official specifications. In August, the larger pack recorded 546 registrations, or 67.4% of the total, while the 42 kWh pack contributed 264 units, or 32.6%.

The January–August comparison adds an important distinction between share and sales. Registrations of the 42 kWh version fell 4.0%, from 1,425 in 2025 to 1,368 in 2026. Its share nevertheless increased from 25.7% to 33.9%.

The 51.4 kWh version declined more sharply, from 4,118 to 2,663 registrations, a fall of 35.3%. Its share moved from 74.3% to 66.1%, although it remained the majority of the market for the model.

The smaller battery gained share because its volume held up better, not because its registrations grew. That makes it a more resilient part of the current mix, rather than a source of absolute year-on-year growth.

IONIQ 5 records 50 registrations in four full months after the update

IONIQ 5 recorded 14 registrations in May, 17 in June, 12 in July and seven in August. January–August volume declined 14.8% year on year.
IONIQ 5 recorded 14 registrations in May, 17 in June, 12 in July and seven in August. January–August volume declined 14.8% year on year.

Hyundai launched the updated IONIQ 5 on 28 April 2026. May–August provides the first four complete calendar months after the update, with 50 registrations in total: 14 in May, 17 in June, 12 in July and seven in August.

The same four months of 2025 recorded 57 registrations, making the 2026 total 12.3% lower. Across January–August, registrations fell 14.8%, from 135 to 115. August alone was down 41.7% from July and 56.3% from August 2025’s 16 units.

These are model-level registrations, not a separate count of the updated version. They may include outgoing stock.

A stronger August with the recovery still to prove

Creta Electric’s rebound is encouraging, but Hyundai’s cumulative EV registrations remain below last year. Base trims have expanded their contribution, the larger battery still leads, and IONIQ 5 remains a small contributor. Sustaining higher Creta Electric volumes is the clearest next test for Hyundai’s recovery.
