The feature reaches the Ather 450X (Gen 2 and later), the 450 Apex, and the Rizta Z, and requires no visit to a service center, it arrives as a software update to eligible connected scooters.
From Preview to Rollout: An 11-Month Gap
Ather first previewed pothole detection at its Community Day event on August 30, 2025, as part of the AtherStack 7.0 software platform. The gap between that preview and this week's actual rollout, roughly eleven months, reflects the nature of the feature itself: Pothole+ depends on crowd-sourced road-condition data gathered from Ather's own connected fleet, and the company needed to accumulate a sufficiently large, reliable dataset before deploying hazard alerts riders could trust. Ather CEO Tarun Mehta announced the rollout on X, framing it as a tool to help riders navigate India's uneven urban and highway road conditions more safely.

How It Works
Pothole+ combines onboard computing with cloud-based fleet intelligence. As connected Ather scooters ride over road hazards, that data is aggregated and fed back into a shared map, which is then used to warn other riders approaching the same stretch of road during active navigation. Because the system relies on live fleet data rather than a fixed, pre-mapped database, hazard accuracy is expected to improve over time as more connected scooters contribute riding data, meaning coverage should get denser and more current in cities with a larger active Ather fleet.
Part of a Broader Software Push
Pothole+ is one piece of the wider AtherStack 7.0 rollout, which has been reaching 450X, 450 Apex, and Rizta Z owners in phases over the past several months alongside other connected features, including voice commands tuned for Indian accents, crash detection with automatic emergency-contact alerts, and tow-away warnings. Pothole+ is the road-hazard-specific piece of that broader platform, rather than a standalone one-off update.
Based on currently available information, none of Ather's major connected-scooter rivals - Ola, TVS, or Bajaj, have shipped an equivalent real-time, crowd-sourced hazard-alert feature built directly into the vehicle's own dashboard and helmet audio, though several offer their own in-display navigation and app-based features. That makes Pothole+ a notable first for this specific capability in the Indian connected-scooter segment, at least for now.
The Case for Dashboard-Native Hazard Alerts
Road hazard warnings aren't a new concept in India, several navigation apps already crowd-source pothole and hazard data, but folding it directly into the scooter's own instrument cluster and helmet audio, without requiring a third-party app, is a meaningfully different approach. For riders navigating India's inconsistent municipal road maintenance, a hazard warning delivered a few seconds ahead of time, without needing to glance at a phone mounted on the handlebar, has a real practical safety case, particularly at night or on unfamiliar routes.
It also reflects a broader shift already visible across India's connected two-wheeler segment: features that once lived in navigation apps or aftermarket dashcams are increasingly being absorbed directly into the vehicle's own software stack. For Ather specifically, it reinforces a positioning the company has leaned into since its Gen 2 hardware, treating the scooter less as a fixed hardware product and more as a software-defined vehicle that keeps gaining new capability well after the sale.
