Volvo EX90 India Launch Confirmed for August 2026

Volvo will launch its flagship electric SUV, the EX90, in India in August 2026. The EX90 will be Volvo's most expensive and most advanced EV in India. It joins a lineup that currently includes the EX30 and EC40; the EX40 was discontinued in India earlier in 2026 and is expected to return in an updated form around the same time as the EX90.

Battery, Power and Range

The EX90 uses an 800V electrical system, which allows faster charging. Globally, Volvo has sold the EX90 with different battery and motor combinations, and the exact India lineup is not confirmed yet. Based on Volvo's global specifications and current reports, the India-spec powertrain lineup is expected to include:

• Single Motor (RWD): Expected to use a 92 kWh battery, the entry-level EX90 produces 333 hp and 480 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0-100 kph in 6.8 seconds and offers a WLTP-certified range of up to 560 km, depending on the wheel size and specification.
• Twin motor, AWD: Expected to use a 106 kWh battery producing 456 hp and 670 Nm. Volvo's global specifications quote 0-100 kph in 5.5 seconds and a WLTP range between roughly 606 and 622 km, depending on wheel size.
• Twin motor Performance, AWD: 106 kWh battery, 680 hp, 870 Nm, 0-100 kph in 4.0 seconds. These figures are based on Volvo's global specifications and could vary for the India-spec mode. Final battery, range and performance figures for India will be confirmed closer to launch

Design

The EX90 looks similar in size to the Volvo XC90 but has an EV-style front end with a closed-off, body-coloured grille and the Volvo logo in the middle. It has slim LED headlights with pixel-style daytime running lights, flush door handles, and C-shaped LED tail lights at the back. Wheel size is expected to be between 20 and 22 inches depending on the variant.

Interior and Features

The EX90 will be sold with 4, 6, or 7-seat layouts, depending on the market. Key features expected on the India version include:

Safety

Volvo describes the EX90 as its safest production vehicle to date. It scored a full 5-star rating in Euro NCAP's 2025 tests, with strong marks for adult protection, child protection, and driver-assist systems. There is no confirmation yet that the EX90 has been tested by Bharat NCAP, so its India-specific safety rating is not known at this stage. The SUV uses a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor along with radar and cameras to support advanced driver assistance features. The hardware is designed to enable higher levels of automated driving where regulations permit, although feature availability varies by market. Other safety features include collision warning, cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and multiple airbags.

Industry estimates suggest the EX90 could be priced between ₹1 crore and ₹1.30 crore (ex-showroom), although Volvo India has not announced official pricing. At this price, it will compete with the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, BMW iX, and Kia EV9, which is already on sale in India at ₹1.30 crore (ex-showroom). The India-spec Kia EV9 GT-Line features a 99.8 kWh battery, produces 379 bhp (384 PS) and 700 Nm of torque, and offers an ARAI-certified range of 561 km.

On paper, the EX90 Twin Motor Performance outpaces the Kia EV9 GT-Line with significantly higher power and quicker acceleration. The EV9 counters with its 800V electrical architecture, claimed 10–80% DC fast charging in around 24 minutes, and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability. If the EX90 is introduced as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), import duties could place its final pricing toward the upper end of current estimates.
