BYD Sealion 7 Leads Premium EV Registrations in August 2026; BMW iX1 and JSW MG M9 Complete Top Three
India’s premium EV market recorded 1,137 registrations in August 2026. The BYD Sealion 7 led the model ranking with 310 registrations, followed by the BMW iX1 and JSW MG M9.
India’s premium electric-car market is developing a clear volume layer below the traditional luxury flagships. SUVs continued to lead, but August also produced meaningful registrations for a luxury electric MPV, two electric sedans and an electric roadster.
Top three models: Sealion 7 leads iX1 and JSW MG M9
The BYD Sealion 7 ranked first with 310 registrations, followed by the BMW iX1 with 266 and the JSW MG M9 with 190.
Together, the three models recorded 766 registrations, representing 67.4% of the entire 1,137-unit premium-EV market.
Table 1. Top three premium EV models in August 2026
Rank | Model | August 2026 registrations | Market share |
1 | BYD Sealion 7 | 310 | 27.3% |
2 | BMW iX1 | 266 | 23.4% |
3 | JSW MG M9 | 190 | 16.7% |
| Top-three total | 766 | 67.4% |
The Sealion 7 finished 44 registrations ahead of the BMW iX1. BYD widened the model’s range during August by introducing a Dynamic variant at an introductory price of ₹41.90 lakh.
The BMW iX1’s 266 registrations demonstrate the scale available to an established luxury brand at a more accessible price point. BMW lists the iX1 LWB from ₹52.70 lakh.
The JSW MG M9’s 190 registrations are also significant because it competes as a large, chauffeur-oriented electric MPV rather than another premium SUV. Its performance suggests that premium-EV demand can extend to rear-seat-focused family, hotel, and corporate use cases.
Top ten models account for 92.7% of registrations

The ten highest-volume model entries contributed 1,054 registrations, or 92.7% of the premium-EV total. Other models accounted for the remaining 83 registrations.

The Tesla Model Y L ranked fourth with 81 registrations. The Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV followed with 60, while the electric CLA added 39. The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV recorded another 22 registrations, giving Mercedes-Benz three entries in the top ten.
Tesla’s two entries should be read separately in the model ranking because the Model Y L is an extended-wheelbase, six-seat vehicle. Combined, however, the Model Y and Model Y L recorded 116 registrations. The larger Model Y L contributed 69.8% of that total, despite being the more expensive version.
The Volvo EX30 recorded 30 registrations, while the specialist JSW MG Cyberster roadster registered 21. Their volumes were smaller, but they illustrate how the premium-EV market is broadening beyond conventional SUVs. The top ten now include SUVs, an MPV, sedans and a roadster.
Top OEMs: BYD stays ahead of BMW

BYD also led the manufacturer ranking with 321 registrations, followed by BMW with 288 and JSW MG with 211.

BMW finished only 33 registrations behind BYD at OEM level. The gap was smaller than the Sealion 7’s lead over the iX1 because BMW received another 22 registrations from models outside the iX1 entry, including 15 from the i7. BYD similarly recorded 11 registrations beyond the Sealion 7.
JSW MG secured third place through the combined strength of the M9 and Cyberster, which together accounted for all 211 of its registrations in the supplied tables. Mercedes-Benz followed with 125, including 60 EQS SUV, 39 CLA and 22 Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV registrations. Tesla’s two Model Y versions produced its entire 116-unit total.
The five largest OEMs contributed 1,061 registrations, equivalent to 93.3% of the market. BYD and JSW MG together accounted for 532 registrations, or 46.8%, underlining the influence of Chinese-owned manufacturers in India’s premium electric segment.
