The First Bentley EV Makes Global Debut: The Bentley Torcal

Marking the brand's first-ever fully electric production vehicle, the Torcal was designed, engineered, and built at Bentley’s headquarters in Crewe, England.

Rather than modifying an existing combustion-engine platform, Bentley developed the Torcal from the ground up to establish a technical blueprint for the marque’s electrified future.

Powertrain and Electric Architecture
 

Being a Bentley, the Torcal boasts huge performance figures while promising a refined driving experience as ever. It utilizes an 800-volt electrical architecture paired with a 113.2 kWh gross (108 kWh usable) battery pack. Dual permanent-magnet synchronous motors drive both axles, supported by a rear electronic locking differential.

• Standard Torcal: Delivers 821 PS (809 bhp) and 1,155 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds (0–60 mph in 3.3 seconds) with a top speed of 250 km/h.
• Torcal S (Sporting Variant): Increases output to 888 PS (875 bhp) and 1,350 Nm of torque with Launch Control active, dropping the 0–100 km/h sprint down to 2.9 seconds and pushing the top speed to 260 km/h.
• Range & Charging: The standard model achieves a WLTP-certified driving range of up to 600 km (373 miles). It supports ultra-fast 400 kW DC charging, allowing a 10% to 80% replenishment in roughly 16 minutes, or adding over 150 miles of range in just 10 minutes.

Exterior Design and Proportions

Led by Design Director Robin Page, the in-house design team at Crewe shaped the Torcal around a low, sleek SUV profile.
 

• Footprint and Dimensions: Measuring five metres in length, the Torcal is positioned as the shortest four-door model in Bentley's current lineup, sitting slightly lower and more compact than the gas-powered Bentayga to prioritize agility.
• Front Fascia: Without the cooling demands of a traditional internal combustion engine, the front end drops the standard mesh in favor of an illuminated, crystal-effect Floating Diamond Grille comprising 76 individual elements that interact with the vehicle's welcome sequence.
• The Rear: The rear design tapers inward while flaring aggressively over the back wheels, that Bentley says is an athletic posture referred to internally as the "resting beast." It is also the first production Bentley to wear the brand's newly redesigned corporate winged badge.
   

Chassis Engineering and Handling Dynamics

Bentley managed to make their first EV weigh approximately 2.7 tonnes, which is about 300 kilos heavier than the gas powered Bentayga, while retaining traditional Bentley ride quality, engineers integrated advanced hardware. There are also a few features to help make the vehicle feel more agile:

• Bentley Active Ride: Replacing conventional mechanical anti-roll bars, the system uses a two-valve shock absorber on every wheel connected to an independently controlled electric hydraulic pump to counteract body roll in real-time.
• All-Wheel Steering: Electronic rear-wheel steering articulates the rear wheels by up to five degrees, reducing the turning circle to 11.1 metres for improved urban maneuverability.

Cabin Design, Materials, and Technology

The interior layout avoids the stark, clinical minimalism found in many contemporary EVs, opting instead for a warm, human-centric design philosophy. Anchored by a classic wing-inspired dashboard, the cabin pairs digital architecture with tangible physical controls and tactile metal switchgear with ‘clickety-clack’ volume knobs and start-stop buttons.
 

• General Layout & Display: The centerpiece of the dash is a vertically curved 12.25-inch high-definition OLED touchscreen that provides crisp visuals without dominating the entire cabin aesthetic. It is complemented by reinterpreted 360-degree “Bullseye Vector Sphere” air vents that deliver a quieter, more natural multi-stream airflow according to Bentley.
• Sustainable Luxury Materials: The cabin showcases pioneering sustainable materials, including the world's first 100% Merino wool automotive fabric, alongside Ombré Walnut wood veneers created from up to 1,000 layers of responsibly sourced wood off-cuts and recycled paper.
• Seating, Lighting, & Sound: Front seats offer 16-way adjustment with heating, ventilation, and advanced massage functions, while the rear features a three-seat bench with a power-folding function for the first time in a Bentley. Ambient illumination is handled by a Dynamic Waterfall Lighting system utilizing over 450 LEDs that react subtly to vehicle acceleration. Audiophiles can opt for the 1,780-watt, 28-speaker Naim audio system featuring Dolby Atmos 7.1.
• The Curation Engine: The cabin atmosphere is coordinated dynamically via a central mode selector (Comfort, Sport, Bentley, and Refresh), which adjusts seating ergonomics, climate, soundscapes, and graphic themes to match the driving mood.

Positioning, and Future Roadmap

Aimed at ultra-high-net-worth individuals seeking zero-emission luxury without compromises, the Torcal sits at the pinnacle of the luxury EV market with a starting price around £160,000.

The vehicle arrives at a strategic inflection point for Bentley. While initial corporate plans targeted an all-electric lineup by the end of the decade, evolving luxury demand has prompted a more flexible product strategy that blends high-performance plug-in hybrids alongside dedicated battery-electric vehicles. The Torcal serves as a foundational test case to gauge how traditional luxury buyers transition into full electrification.

India Launch Outlook

The Bentley Torcal is officially scheduled to arrive in India in the second half of 2027, with an expected ex-showroom price of around ₹4.5 crore.

Because imported electric vehicles do not qualify for the same customs duty structures available to certain UK-built combustion vehicles under bilateral trade frameworks, the Torcal will carry a steep price premium in the domestic market. Despite these import costs and infrastructure hurdles regarding ultra-fast public chargers, the vehicle is expected to find buyers among elite collectors interested in owning Bentley's first-ever electric offering.
