Sierra.ev Is Already the Sierra’s No. 2 Powertrain—and Its Best-Selling Configuration
In its first full month of sales, the Sierra.ev contributed 1,405 units and captured 30.1% of Tata Sierra volume. Diesel remained the leading powertrain, but no individual engine-and-transmission combination sold more than the EV.
The Sierra.ev has opened with a much larger role in the Tata Sierra range than a typical low-volume electric derivative.
Tata sold 4,667 Sierras in August 2026, of which 1,405 were electric. That made the EV the nameplate’s second-largest powertrain—behind diesel, but ahead of naturally aspirated petrol and turbo-petrol.
EV is already the second-largest Sierra powertrain
Diesel led with 1,774 units, representing 38.0% of Sierra sales. The EV followed with 1,405 units and a 30.1% share. Naturally aspirated petrol recorded 1,233 units, or 26.4%, while turbo-petrol contributed 255 units, or 5.5%.
The gap between diesel and EV was only 369 units. The Sierra.ev also outsold naturally aspirated petrol by 172 units and recorded more than five times the volume of turbo-petrol.
For an EV in its first full month, this was not a peripheral contribution. Electric was already responsible for roughly three out of every ten Sierras sold.

Sierra’s ICE buyers still strongly prefer manuals
The broader transmission mix reveals the contradiction.
The diesel and naturally aspirated petrol manuals together contributed 2,153 units, or 46.1% of all Sierra sales. The EV accounted for 1,405 units, or 30.1%, while all three ICE automatic combinations collectively generated 1,109 units, or 23.8%.
Among the 3,262 ICE Sierras sold, manuals held a 66.0% share. This preference was strongest in naturally aspirated petrol: the six-speed manual recorded 1,048 sales, compared with only 185 for the seven-speed DCA. Diesel was more balanced, with 1,105 manual and 669 automatic sales. Turbo-petrol was offered here only with the six-speed torque converter and recorded 255 units.

A strong opening, but the next few months matter
One month cannot establish a lasting demand pattern. Initial allocation, launch bookings, vehicle availability and pent-up deliveries can all influence an EV’s opening sales mix.
August nevertheless establishes that the Sierra.ev is a core part of the range. It did not merely outsell both petrol powertrains; it also emerged as the Sierra’s highest-selling individual configuration.
The next three to six months will show whether the EV can sustain a share near 30% and close its 369-unit gap to diesel, or whether August primarily reflected the first wave of deliveries. For now, the hierarchy is clear: diesel leads by powertrain, while the Sierra.ev leads by individual configuration.
