Tata Motors Achieves 250,000 EV Sales Landmark: Nexon EV Leads the Charge
Tata Motors becomes the first Indian brand to cross 250,000 EV sales, driven by the Nexon EV's 1 lakh milestone—backed by a diverse lineup and expanding charging network targeting 1 lakh public points by 2030.
Tata Motors has marked a significant achievement in India's electric mobility journey, crossing the 250,000-unit sales threshold for its electric vehicles since the launch of the Nexon EV in early 2020. This milestone positions Tata as the pioneering brand in the country to reach this volume, reflecting robust consumer trust and a maturing EV ecosystem.
The Nexon EV has been the cornerstone of this success, becoming the first electric car in India to exceed 100,000 cumulative sales—accomplished in approximately six years, with the 50,000-unit mark hit in June 2023. It contributes 40% to Tata's overall EV sales, underscoring its appeal in the compact SUV segment.
Diverse Portfolio Spans Segments with Local Touch
Tata now boasts the broadest EV lineup in the Indian market, featuring six models priced from around ₹8 lakh to ₹30 lakh (ex-showroom). The range includes:
- Tiago EV: An entry-level hatchback for urban commuters.
- Tigor EV: A sedan variant, including the fleet-focused Xpres-T edition.
- Punch EV and Nexon EV: Compact SUVs gaining traction in the sub-4m category.
- Curvv EV and Harrier EV: Premium offerings targeting mid-size buyers with advanced features.
Notably, every Tata internal combustion engine (ICE) model—except the Altroz hatchback and Safari SUV—has an electric counterpart, ensuring broad accessibility across segments. All EVs incorporate over 50% locally sourced components, including power electronics and thermal management systems, supporting India's self-reliance goals.
Customer data reveals strong adoption trends: Over 26% of EV buyers are first-time car owners, and 84% rely on their electric vehicle as their primary mode of transport, highlighting shifting preferences toward sustainable options.
Expanding Charging Network: From 2 Lakh Points to 1 Lakh Public Stations
Complementing its sales growth, Tata has built an extensive charging infrastructure, with more than 200,000 points nationwide—including home, community, and public setups. This network features 100 MegaCharger hubs along key highway corridors, each equipped with up to 16 charging points delivering speeds of 120 kW.
Looking ahead, Tata plans to scale public charging infrastructure to 30,000 points by the end of 2027 and up to 100,000 by the close of the decade, facilitated through its Tata.ev Open Collaboration initiative. This expansion aims to alleviate range anxiety and support the growing EV user base.
A Foundation for Future Leadership
Tata's rapid ascent in the EV space—holding a commanding market share—demonstrates the effectiveness of its integrated approach, from product diversity to ecosystem development. As India pushes toward 30% EV penetration by 2030, Tata's milestones set a benchmark for the industry, paving the way for further innovations in the years ahead.
