India's public EV charging network is entering a different phase. Electricity consumption at public charging stations rose by more than 72% in FY2025-26, according to data reported on August 19. The number is significant, but not simply because it is large. It suggests that demand for public charging is beginning to catch up with the infrastructure India has been building.

For years, the easiest way to measure India's charging progress was to count stations. That remains important, but it does not tell the whole story. A charger that is installed but rarely used has limited commercial value. What matters increasingly is how much useful charging the network can actually deliver. The Next Metric May Be Utilisation

India's public charging network has expanded rapidly. Government data reported in July 2026 put the number of public charging stations at 52,718, including 16,561 equipped with fast-charging facilities.

Now the industry has another question to answer: Are these chargers getting enough traffic?

The 72% increase in electricity consumption does not mean individual chargers were used 72% more. Electricity demand can rise because there are more EVs, more charging sessions, higher-power chargers or greater use by commercial fleets. But it does provide a useful signal that public charging activity is increasing.

That is arguably more meaningful than another headline about the number of chargers installed.

Commercial EVs Could Be Important

Private EV owners can often charge at home. Commercial vehicles have a very different usage pattern.

Electric taxis, buses, delivery vehicles and fleet cars generally travel more and spend more time on the road. As their numbers increase, public charging can become part of their daily operating cycle rather than an occasional requirement.

This could make commercial EV adoption an important driver of charging demand, particularly around fleet hubs, logistics centres and major travel corridors.

It also changes what makes a charging location valuable. The best site may not be the one with the most expensive hardware. It may be the one where vehicles consistently need to stop and charge.

More Chargers Are Not Automatically Better

India will still need more charging infrastructure as EV adoption grows. But the next challenge is likely to be quality and utilisation, not just quantity.

A commercially useful charging network needs several things to work together: reliable chargers, suitable locations, adequate power supply, reasonable charging speeds and enough vehicles using the infrastructure.

This is where the business model becomes important.

Public chargers have upfront costs, and poorly utilised assets can take longer to recover their investment. Higher utilisation could therefore improve the economics of charging operators without requiring every new EV to have a dedicated charger.

That could gradually push the market towards a more practical question:

Who can build the most useful charging network, rather than simply the biggest one?

The Power Grid Becomes Part of the EV Story

There is another angle to the 72% rise. Public charging is turning EV adoption into an increasingly visible electricity-demand story.

As charging hubs become busier, especially high-power sites, local electricity networks will need to support larger and more concentrated loads. India's EV transition therefore involves more than vehicles and chargers. It increasingly involves distribution infrastructure as well.

The government has allocated ₹2,000 crore under PM E-DRIVE for public EV charging infrastructure, while the Ministry of Power has also issued guidelines aimed at supporting a more accessible and interoperable charging network.

The next phase will be about making those investments work efficiently.

What the 72% Number Doesn't Tell Us

The latest figure is encouraging, but it needs context.

It does not tell us the average utilisation of an individual charger, how much demand is concentrated in particular cities or highways, or whether charging operators are consistently making money.

Those are the numbers worth watching next.

If electricity consumption continues rising faster than the charging network itself, that would be a stronger indication that existing infrastructure is being used more intensively. If station numbers rise much faster than electricity consumption, the industry could face a different problem: too much infrastructure chasing too little demand in some locations.

The Bigger Shift

India's first charging challenge was straightforward: build enough infrastructure for the EVs coming onto the roads.

The next challenge is harder: make that infrastructure reliable, well located and commercially viable.

The 72% increase in public charging electricity consumption does not mean India has solved its charging problem. But it does suggest the network is becoming a more important part of how EVs actually operate.

India may no longer need to ask only how many chargers it has. It increasingly needs to ask how much work those chargers are doing.
