The Renault Duster Strong Hybrid costs ₹16.99 lakh to ₹19.49 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Toyota Hyryder hybrid costs ₹17.18 lakh to ₹19.99 lakh (ex-showroom). We compare the powertrains and important features of all three variants for both these cars.
Renault launched the Duster Strong Hybrid at ₹16.99 lakh (ex-showroom) on October 17, 2026. The price has become the talk of the industry and enthusiasts. It has also created some confusion for those who were planning to buy a strong hybrid vehicle this Diwali.
The segment is led by the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, priced from ₹17.18 lakh to ₹19.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The Duster Strong Hybrid's introductory price ranges from ₹16.99 lakh to ₹19.49 lakh (ex-showroom) with deliveries to commence in November.
This article aims to bring some clarity by comparing the important specifications and features of all variants for both these cars.
Powertrain

The Duster uses a 1.8 litre (1,789 cc) naturally aspirated petrol engine that makes 110 ps and 175 Nm. It is paired with an electric motor of 50 ps and 208 Nm, and a 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery at 247 V. The combined system output is 160 ps.
The Hyryder uses a 1.5 litre (1,490 cc) petrol engine that makes 92.45 ps and 122 Nm. Its electric motor makes 80.2 ps and 141 Nm. The battery is a 0.6 kWh lithium-ion unit at 177.6 V, and the combined system output is 115.56 ps.
That makes the Duster 44.44 ps (38.5%) more powerful on paper, and its battery is more than twice the size which translates to a better EV mode range. The Hyryder has the stronger motor in power terms, while the Duster’s motor makes more torque.
The gearboxes also differ. The Duster has a multi-mode automatic with a dog clutch, which locks gears together mechanically, without a friction clutch. It has 2 electric and 4 petrol gears, giving 8 possible gear ratios. The Hyryder uses Toyota’s e-Drive transmission which is an e-CVT. This provides Duster a much sportier drive in comparison.
Renault claims an ARAI certified 29 km/l for the Duster. Toyota claims 27.97 km/l for the Hyryder hybrid. The difference is 1.03 km/l (3.7%) in the claimed efficiencies.
Boot space differs as well. Renault quotes 544 litres up to the roof and 372 litres up to the parcel shelf. The Hyryder hybrid has about 273 litres. The Duster also has a 50 litre fuel tank against 45 litres in the Hyryder.
Duster received a 5-star BNCAP safety rating whereas the Hyryder does not possess any safety rating. Both cars offer 6 airbags as standard but neither offers ADAS in any variant.
Both batteries come with an 8 year or 1.6 lakh km warranty.
Entry Variants: Duster Evolution vs Hyryder S

The Duster Evolution costs ₹16.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and the Hyryder S costs ₹17.18 lakh (ex-showroom), so the Duster is ₹19,000 cheaper.
Inside, the Evolution has black seats with grey stitching and a deep grey melange fabric. The Hyryder S has the black and brown dual-tone interior that runs across all its hybrid variants, with brown fabric seats.
Both cars have 6 airbags, a rear camera, rear parking sensors, TPMS, ESC, hill hold and cruise control. Both have rear AC vents and wireless Android Auto and CarPlay. Neither has a sunroof.
The Evolution has the longer equipment list at this price. It gets a 10.1 inch touchscreen with 6 speakers, where the Hyryder S has a 7 inch screen with 4 speakers. It also adds dual-zone climate control, wireless charging, an electric parking brake with auto-hold, automatic headlamps, follow-me-home lamps and a rear wiper and washer. The Hyryder S has none of these. It also has bi-halogen projector headlamps where the Evolution has eco LED headlamps.
The Hyryder S has push-button start with keyless entry, which the Evolution lacks. The Evolution has remote keyless entry only.
Mid Variants: Duster Techno vs Hyryder G(O)

The Duster Techno costs ₹18.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and the Hyryder G(O) costs ₹19.24 lakh (ex-showroom), a gap of ₹25,000 in the Duster’s favour.
Going from Evolution to Techno costs ₹2 lakh. Going from S to G(O) costs ₹2.06 lakh. Both steps bring the panoramic sunroof and full LED headlamps.
The Techno changes the interior theme to desert beige and brown, with semi-leatherette seats. The G(O) keeps the black and brown dual-tone, with brown fabric seats, and adds a soft-touch dashboard with premium stitching and ambient lighting at the doors.
Both cars at this level have the panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, auto-folding mirrors, push-button start, LED headlamps, automatic headlamps, a rear wiper and a connected car app. The airbags, cameras, sensors and safety kit remain the same as in the entry variants.
The Techno adds approach unlock and walkaway closing, remote operation of the windows and sunroof, and a welcome and goodbye light sequence. It keeps the electric parking brake and dual-zone climate control. The G(O) adds ventilated front seats, a rear door sunshade and an AQI display, along with a 9 inch screen and 17 inch machined alloy wheels. The Techno stays on 18 inch flex wheels, with a 10.1 inch screen.
Top Variants: Duster Emotion vs Hyryder V

The Duster Emotion costs ₹19.49 lakh (ex-showroom) and the Hyryder V costs ₹19.99 lakh (ex-showroom), so the Duster is ₹50,000 cheaper. The step up from the middle variant is ₹50,000 on the Duster and ₹75,000 on the Hyryder.
The Emotion has dune brown leatherette seats with carbon accents and a leatherette wrapped steering wheel. The Hyryder V has brown leatherette seats and a leather steering wheel, with ambient lighting at the doors and along the dashboard.

Both cars at the top have the panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, wireless charging, leatherette upholstery, 6 airbags and the same safety equipment. Both have electrically adjustable front seats too, though the Emotion has 6-way adjustment for both driver and passenger, while the Hyryder V has 8-way adjustment for the driver only.
The Emotion adds comfort features like an acoustic windshield, a powered tailgate, approach unlock and walkaway closing, and a 10.25 inch driver display. It also has 18 inch diamond-cut alloys and the electric parking brake.
The Hyryder V adds a 360 degree camera and a head-up display, neither of which is in the Duster’s equipment list.
ElecTree’s Take
On paper, the Duster is the stronger car. It has the bigger engine, more power and the better efficiency claim, and it is priced below the Hyryder at every step. It has the better cabin feel, and features such as the acoustic windshield, powered tailgate and approach unlock are the kind buyers like.
The Hyryder fights back with the 360 degree camera and head-up display in its top variant, which the Duster misses out on. It also has the backing of Toyota’s long presence in the country.
For those chasing power, equipment and price, the Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 is the one to look at. For those who want the proven name and the convenience of a 360 degree camera, the Hyryder remains a very good option.
