Ather’s Calculated Climb
Ather Energy followed a significantly slower, customer-centric model, executing only 11 product launches over eight years starting in 2018. The author details how Ather built a highly reliable ecosystem by focusing on platform stability, ensuring service quality, and eventually launching the mass-market Rizta series. This steady strategy ultimately allowed Ather to overtake Ola in total sales for the first time in 2025
To truly understand the impact of Ola's strategy, we must look at the competition. Ather Energy started selling electric two-wheelers in 2018. They launched two models in June of that year: the Ather 450 and the Ather 340.
Over the next eight years, Ather executed just 11 product launches, generational updates, or variant additions—a stark contrast to Ola's 17 launches in half the time.

Building the Premium Foundation
Ather started with the 450 (premium) and the 340 (a cheaper 1.9 kWh model) in 2018. When the 340 failed to generate demand, they quietly discontinued it in 2019 and focused entirely on their premium offering. Ather sold the 450 exclusively for two full years before replacing it with the 450X. During this time, they intentionally limited touchpoints to specific states to ensure service quality.
Deliveries for the 450X and 450 Plus began in November 2020. Over the next 20 months, they sold 26,185 units of the 450X. It wasn't until July 2022—2.5 years after the 450X was announced—that they introduced the Gen 3 upgrade, primarily focusing on a larger battery. Still on a single-model crusade, Ather steadily expanded its touchpoints and sales numbers organically.
In August 2023, Ather finally split the 450X into two variants (the 3.7 kWh LR and the 2.9 kWh HR). It also launched the 450S, officially marking its foray into the mid-level segment.

Expanding the Roster: Mid-Level and Performance
In August 2023, Ather introduced the 450S as its dedicated mid-level model, initially launching only with the 3.7 kWh battery. It took another two years before the smaller 2.9 kWh 450S HR was added in August 2025.
To cater to the enthusiast crowd, Ather launched the high-performance 450 Apex in January 2024 to mark the company's anniversary.

The Family Segment Pivot
For six years (2018 to 2024), the 450 series was the undisputed bread-and-butter for Ather, designed specifically for young, tech-savvy urban commuters. But to achieve true mass-market scale, they needed to capture the family commuter segment.
In April 2024, Ather launched the Rizta series. Deliveries began in June 2024, and the product was an instant hit. Designed from the ground up for practicality and space, it quickly began clocking higher sales numbers than the venerable 450 series.
