India's 4-wheeler EV market registered 23,268 units in April 2026, according to Vahan data. March 2026 had recorded 23,755 units. This is the first time in India's EV history that monthly registrations have crossed 20,000 in two consecutive months. A new floor appears to be forming.

Year on year, April 2026 is 73.5% higher than April 2025, which had recorded 13,413 units. The overall market is growing — and growing fast.

There is another number worth pausing on. In just the first four months of 2026, India has registered 81,208 4W EVs. The entire calendar year of 2024 saw 84,314 units. In other words, 2026 has nearly matched a full year of 2024 in just four months.

  • Tata remains the undisputed market leader at 8,543 units in April, growing 77% year on year. On a YTD basis, Tata holds 39% of the market with 31,649 units.
  • Mahindra has now overtaken MG in two consecutive months — March (5,651 vs 5,552) and April (5,413 vs 5,006). This is no longer a one-month anomaly. The Windsor has reached a volume ceiling without a new launch to refresh demand. JSW MG will need new product to reclaim second place. The launch of the XEV 9S has given Mahindra an edge. On a YTD basis, the top three — Tata, MG and Mahindra — account for approximately 85% of all 4W EV registrations.
  • Maruti's eVitara registered 1,231 units in April, its second month on sale. Despite widely reported product concerns from reviewers, Maruti's unmatched brand trust and dealer network are clearly doing the work.
  • VinFast posted 1,232 units — its highest ever monthly number. However 400 of these were registered as Motor Cabs in Delhi's Burari Taxi unit (DL 52), pointing to fleet registrations rather than retail sales. The company appears to be launching a fleet service in Delhi with VinFast Limo Green.
  • Tesla registered 43 units in April, bringing its 2026 YTD total to 162 units. With only 3 stores nationally, volume is constrained by distribution rather than demand. The performance of the new Tesla Model Y L will be seen in the coming months.
  • Hyundai registered 516 units in April, broadly flat month on month. The relaunch of the updated IONIQ 5 at ₹55.70 may have minimal impact as majority sales come from the Creta Electric.
  • Kia India and BMW registered 342 and 300 unit respectively — lower than March 2026 values but consistent with other months of the year. Businesses registering them in the final month of the FY 2025-26 is a possible reason.

Overall 4-wheeler sales in April 2026 stood at 4,05,381 units — down approximately 10% from March's 4,49,961 units, though up 12.5% year on year versus April 2025's 3,60,262 units. Global fuel price uncertainty driven by tensions in the Middle East may be a contributing factor to the monthly softness in overall auto sales.

Within this softer overall market, EVs held their ground. EV penetration as a share of total 4W sales touched 5.8% in April 2026, approaching 6% for the first time. As recently as October 2025, EV penetration stood at 3.4% and 3.7% in February 2026. The trajectory over the past two months suggest that EVs may have found a new floor and the current macroeconomic conditions will either stabilize the trend or push it even further upwards.
